Mind Meals

January 27, 2011
One of my clients is a very successful corporate executive who engaged in a six-session life coaching process with me.  After our very first session, this man called me on the phone and said, “Paul, it’s like my mind was hungry for this.”  Many of us don’t realize that we feed our minds daily – the question becomes WHAT do we feed our minds.  To intentionally consume mind food that inspires, uplifts, enlightens, and encourages will go far toward assisting you to remain in a paradigm of positivity and production.

If you would hit the mark, you must aim a little above it; every arrow that flies feels the attraction of earth.

Petrified

Petrified Wood

Petrified Wood

I recently got a piece of petrified wood as a prize for solving a puzzle at a family reunion.  As I hefted the piece I realized that petrified wood is not wood at all – it is stone.  It still has the appearance of wood, because that’s what it started as.  A gradual process of minerals penetrating and replacing the fibers of the wood has turned it to stone.  In a similar way, we don’t change suddenly or overnight – it is a gradual process of principles penetrating and replacing the old thoughts and habits with something more solid and enduring.  You are a work in progress!

We cannot become what we need to be by remaining what we are.

Playing The Game

May 27, 2009

As I was enjoying game four of the Eastern Conference NBA Finals last night with my sons, I realized that a game without real challenges is not very interesting.  Life is a game.  The object of this game is to learn things, gain experience, and have joy.  As you are playing this game, there will be turns when you draw a card that reads “Bankrupt,” or “Go Back Three Steps,” or “You Lose a Loved One.”  Other cards will say “Payday,” or “Fall in Love,” or “Advance Token to Disneyland.”  Whatever card you have drawn this turn, the objective remains the same – learn something, gain experience, and have joy.  Win this turn, regardless of the card that is drawn!

It is in this whole process of meeting and solving problems that life has its meaning.  Problems are the cutting edge that distinguishes between success and failure.  Problems call forth our courage and our wisdom; indeed they create our courage and our wisdom.

Live On Purpose, No Matter What

April 5, 2009

You hopefully watched the video clip I posted last week of Mary Louise Zeller.  Mary Louise is a 5th degree black belt and 8 time world champion in Tae Kwan Do. At the age of 65, Master Zeller continues to coach and compete, and is preparing for the next olympics when others her age are cheering on their grandkids to do so. She is truly an example of living an ageless and limitless life.  I was honored to interview her this week (watch Live On Purpose Radio for the show in a few days).  She pointed out that sometimes we don’t feel like doing what we know we should to move forward with our goals.  Well, how we feel is sometimes no more significant than the weather report.  Sometimes the weather is stormy, and sometimes it is clear.  Live on purpose, no matter what!

Scary Times Success Manual

November 12, 2008

Viktor Frankl, in his book Man’s Search For Meaning, identified what he called the “last of human freedoms” which is the freedom to choose your attitude in any given set of circumstances.  Successful people everywhere understand this as they see the challenges in their life as opportunities – not as bringing opportunities, but as opportunities in and of themselves.  One of my coaches, Dan Sullivan, has applied this in an extraordinary way by saying that other people’s problems are our opportunities.  Finding ways to create value for others by helping them through their own hard times is a key to prosperity.  I’ve included today a copy of an article that Dan wrote about this – hope you find it helpful.

Don’t just survive, Thrive!

P.S.  I’m really excited about Live On Purpose Radio this week – I will be interviewing Frank W. Abagnale.  Some of you will recognize that name from the movie, “Catch Me If You Can” with Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks.  I’ve already posted a recording of Frank telling his story – the interview with me will be posted later this week.  You will love this story, and the surprise ending that pulls it all back to principle and family.  Please share this with your friends!  www.liveonpurposeradio.com
